CHAPTER 14

Jack’s eyes went wide as sweat beaded on his brow after only seconds in the intense environment. Cate’s stomach turned over, not recognizing the realm despite having been there once before. It had been a difficult journey, one that had been exceptionally dangerous. Between the heat, the head games, and the creatures, she’d nearly lost her life more than once. Had it not been for Celine, Damien, and Michael–all immortals–she wouldn’t have made it through as a human.

This time, there were two humans and only one immortal–and a sketchy one at that. The odds were against them. And Cate would never forgive herself if something happened to Jack. She did not want to leave the twins fatherless.

“Dominique!” she shouted as she stormed after her.

“What?” Dominique called over her shoulder, her figure silhouetted against a skyline of jagged, molten cliffs that seemed to bleed into the crimson sky, utterly unfazed by the suffocating waves of heat that warped the air around her.

“How could you bring us here?” Cate’s voice cracked, her eyes scanning the perilous terrain that had once nearly claimed her life, the weight of her responsibility for Jack pressing down on her."

Dominique glanced at her, her eyebrows furrowing. “With a location hop. I thought I was clear about that.”

“That’s not what I meant, and you know it.”

“I didn’t,” Dominique retorted. “I almost never know what you mean. You and I are really not on the same wavelength.”

“I don’t mean the logistics of how we ended up in the Hellscape, which I still wonder about because I thought location hops were earthbound.”

“Not when you have skills like mine, cupcake,” she answered with a grin.

“Anyway, that wasn’t the genesis of the question. I meant how could you bring us to the Hellscape? We could die here.”

“We could?” Jack asked as he puffed with effort to breathe in the thick, hot air.

“Yes, we could. If not from the extreme elements, from the many, dangerous creatures that lurk here, or that crazy place where your own thoughts attack you.”

Jack’s jaw dropped open, a bead of sweat trailing down his temple as he gasped for air that felt like inhaling through an open oven door. “What? That’s... that’s not possible, right?” His voice was a mix of disbelief and rising panic.

“We’re not going to that part,” Dominique said with a sigh. “It’s not far from here. You’ll be fine.”

“I don’t believe you. Plus, a little warning would have been nice. I would never have agreed to bring Jack here.”

“Whoa, but you would have come?” Jack asked.

“Yes, I would have because I want to hear what this so-called contact has to say. Plus, I’ve been here once before.”

Dominique shot her a narrow-eyed glance. “That’s right. You’re the jerk who freed Marcus from his contract with The Order. Gosh, you were annoying back then.”

Cate shook her head at Dominique as they passed a burning bush. “You’re annoying right now. I can’t believe you brought us to Hell.”

“I really never wanted to come here, even for a visit,” Jack said.
